Travel motor and final drive Nov 27, 2023

What is a travel motor?

The travel motor is essentially the hydraulic motor interfaces with the final drive, providing the power that the final drive transforms into torque. That torque is transferred to the sprocket, which then turns the wheel and track.

What is the function of a travel motor on excavator?

Travel motors are hydraulic motors that increase driving power properly for the travel conditions of excavators using oil pressure, maintain adequate speed, shift the gears to move forward or backward, and convey or cut off power.

What is a final drive?

The final drive is an assembly of gears in the back axle of rear-wheel drive (= with engine power going to the rear wheels) vehicles and in the front axle of front-wheel drive (= with engine power going to the front wheels) vehicles. The last set of gears in the drive train is the final drive.

What is the function of the final drive on an excavator?

A final drive's main function is to reduce the speed of the propeller shaft by decreasing RPMs and increasing the torque. This all begins when the final drive engine's transmitted torque is split up with the two driving tracks and can turn the final drive at a 90-degree angle.

What is the difference between travel motor and final drive?

By some definitions, the travel motor may be considered part of the final drive. The final drive either refers to the combined hydraulic motor and planetary gear hub, or to the gear hub only. The travel motor refers to the hydraulic motor.
