The origin of National Day Sep 25, 2023

On October 1, 1949, the founding ceremony of the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China, that is, the founding ceremony, was grandly held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

"The first person to propose the 'National Day' was Mr. Ma Xulun, then a member of the CPPCC and chief representative of the Democratic Progress Party."

On October 9, 1949, the first National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held its first session. Member Xu Guangping spoke :" Ma Xulun can not come on leave, he asked me to say that the establishment of the People's Republic of China, there should be a National Day, so I hope this Council will decide to set October 1 as the National Day." Member LAM Pok Yuen also spoke and seconded the motion, requesting discussion on the decision. On the same day, the meeting passed the proposal of "asking the government to specify October 1 as the National Day of the People's Republic of China to replace the old National Day on October 10" and sent the Central People's Government to adopt and implement.

On December 2, 1949, the resolution adopted at the fourth meeting of the Committee of the Central People's Government stated :" The Committee of the Central People's Government hereby declares that, since 1950, October 1 of each year, that is, the great day on which the People's Republic of China was proclaimed, shall be the National Day of the People's Republic of China."

This is why "October 1" was identified as the "birthday" of the People's Republic of China, that is, the "National Day". Since 1950, October 1 every year has become a grand celebration of the Chinese people of all ethnic groups.

In the early days of the founding of New China (1950-1959), large-scale celebrations and military parades were held every year on the National Day.

In September 1960, the CPC Central Committee and The State Council decided to reform the National Day system in line with the principle of building a nation through diligence and thrift. Since then, from 1960 to 1970, grand rallies and mass parades have been held in front of Tiananmen Square every year on National Day, but no military parade has been held.

From 1971 to 1983, every year on October 1, Beijing celebrated the National Day with large-scale garden party activities and other forms, without mass parades. In 1984, the 35th anniversary of the National Day, held a grand National Day parade and mass celebration parade. In the following ten years, the National Day was celebrated in other forms, and no National Day parade and mass celebration parade were held.

On October 1, 1999, the 50th anniversary of the National Day, a grand National Day parade and mass celebration parade were held. This was the last grand National Day celebration held by the People's Republic of China in the 20th century.

The National Day of the People's Republic of China is a symbol of the country, which appears with the emergence of the country and becomes particularly important. It became the symbol of an independent country, reflecting the state and polity of that country.

Once the special commemoration of the National Day becomes a new and national holiday form, it carries the function of reflecting the cohesion of the country and the nation. At the same time, the large-scale celebration activities on the National Day are also the concrete embodiment of the government's mobilization and appeal.
